How To Survive When Mommy and Munchkin are Sick

Whatever this cold is it sure is dragging on and on. Sky has been sick for two weeks, and I’ve been sick for about a week now. The worst part is the cough. It’s killing my back, seriously have a rib out because of it.

The really messed up thing about kiddo’s being sick is they don’t know how to be sick very well. Sky still needs an energy burn, and to get out of the house. Normally it’s fine and I’m happy to take her to the park and explore trails to keep her away from the masses, but when I’m sick and don’t feel like doing much other than staying in pj’s and laying on the couch it’s not fun for anyone. Why can’t she just lay around with me all day?!
So, I suck it up, put on real clothes and get the girl out and about for a few hours.
She knew I wasn’t feeling great and decided cake pops would make it all better. She specifically asked if we could go in and sit down. Getting out of the car and going in is a real treat for her. I probably shouldn’t have shared our germs with Starbucks, but I did find a table away from everyone and we didn’t stay long.
Super thankful to have awesome new clothes to slip into when I need a quick “real” outfit to leave the house in. My style is mostly athletic as daily wear, but I’m stepping it up and adding boots, or ballet flats (not running shoes), and adding accessories to make it more of a real outfit. I have to say Athleta, and my Dad, are making it super easy to pull a put together, yet casual and comfy look. I have added some nicer tops and jeans as well to the wardrobe, but when I’m sick that’s just too much to deal with!
We stayed home sick for NYE just the three of us. I’m ok with that though. It makes it a little more special for Mark and I to spend the anniversary of the day we met together! Jan 1, 2010…15 years later and still happy and having fun on this amazing adventure!
How I partied NYE…was in bed before midnight and didn’t have any champagne. 😦
Thank Goodness friends gave us some fun games for Christmas so we had family game night and movies instead of partying in the new year. Sky was over the top excited about the Doc McStuffins Operation game!

She doesn’t exactly get the point…she likes making is buzz.

I made missing champagne at midnight by making sparkling poinsettia’s for breakfast New Years Day, and cooking breakfast for us.

I knew New Years Day was going to be spent watching college football all day long…always has been my favorite day of the year!….so Sky and I bundled up and went to the park to burn some energy before the football fest started. Don’t let the sun fool you…it was cold, really cold!
 This view never gets old!

I’m taking advantage of her small burst of energy, and my small windows of feeling like being active enough to get out of the house, to make sure we don’t go stir crazy. It’s tough though because the melt down factor is sky hi when Sky’s had enough. So, it’s quick, close to home excursions and then back home to rest and recover.
Thank goodness for movies, football, hide and seek with all the lights off, operation, her new bed that still offers hours of play time, and Mark’s zombie dice game. Oh, and wine…mostly for Mark dealing with two sick ladies in the house. We are getting through this, and I’m so ready for school and swimming to start back up next week. Ready for a regular schedule again!
I hope everyone’s New Year is off to a great start!

I’m Going to Miss Our Tree!

It’s always a little sad when Christmas is over because I love the reason for the season. The kindness and goodwill, time with family and friends, and even though it’s a busy time it’s also time to slow down and focus on things other than the daily grind. It’s a nice break from “real” life.

It also goes along with the end of the NFL regular season, which is sad. I love playoffs and the SB and all that, but the end of regular season means I’m at loose ends Sunday and Monday nights, and once playoffs are over I’ll have to be productive on Sunday’s again as well. :-/
Even though I love Christmas once it’s done, it’s done. Dec 26th all the decoration came down, the house got put back to normal, and the tree came down between games on Sunday. Technically the tree is still up, but it’s naked, and sad, and I want it to go completely away now. I’m that way with life in general, once something is done, I’m over it and moving on. No looking back, bring on whatever is next.
We enjoyed the outdoor tree more than I thought we would. I was a little sad about not having our inside one this year, but once the courtyard tree went up it was the best thing ever!
Enjoying the last Egg Nog latte of the year.
 Spiked Hot Chocolate!

The thing I’ll miss the most is snuggling with Sky looking at the lights. Silas enjoyed it as well.

Now it’s time to look to New Years Eve and the New Year. I actually have no idea what we are doing this year for NYE, if anything. In years past we hosted a PJ NYE Party. But, now that we host Christmas dinner/gift exchange that’s too much large party planning too close together, so we haven’t been doing the NYE party. Last year we stayed home just the 3 of us, and were in bed long before midnight. May sound lame, but it’s actually really nice not to be overly tired/hung over when the tot gets up at the the same early hour no matter what.
I suppose I had better nail down my resolutions. I don’t usually make NY Resolutions, but this year there are a few changes/things I want to work on that are ready to happen now, so this year there are resolutions. Just general ideas right now, but I’m listing them out and making them specific to ensure success!
Resolution #1 is to find a new background for photos…the tree was pretty perfect!

A few random pics from the last several days……………

Sunday morning run. The good news is that while I have constant accident related pain, the last few runs have not made it worse, and things seem to be holding steady. I’m slowly upping the number of runs per week and will start adding a mile or two every other run to see what happens. Keeping an easy pace seems to be helping.

Sadly Sky ended up with a pretty nasty little cold. We made it through Christmas day, but she was overdone by the time we left the parents house. We had an opportunity to have some family photos done a few days later and were keeping our fingers crossed Sky would feel up to it. Thankfully she held it together through the morning photo session and lunch after (yes we bribed her with lunch out and cake if she listened and cooperated for the photos). Judge if you must, but it worked and we got some great photos! She was done though, crashed on the way home, slept for hours and was cranky as all get out the rest of the day. It was totally worth it…can’t wait to see the proofs!

If you like Chipotle flavor you need to try this sauce! Super easy…I sauteed up a batch of fajita veggies and steak using only salt and pepper then added this sauce to let is simmer a bit, heated up some corn tortillas and added guacamole and it was really good! It has now become a pantry staple for us!

Sky is all about tea parties, so this tea set has proven to be one of her favorite gifts of the season! It’s tea party time all the time around here! 🙂

My favorite kind of Christmas morning sparkle!

We may have added another tradition to our Christmas…Sushi for Christmas Eve dinner! It was totally spur of the moment, totally yummy, and totally a nice treat to not have to cook dinner that evening. It was also the perfect break from the “normal” food of the season. After that we found pretty lights to look at, and even found a house that does a free display set to music. We tuned in and listened for a bit and then headed home to watch Christmas Movies.

They ran and played in the yard and tired each other out…my idea of a perfect afternoon at home = all three of them tired and resting in peace.
Mommy, mommy, Silas is sitting with me…hurry take our picture! They have been cuddling watching cartoons together all morning.

Knee Update!

My knee feels better!!! It’s not 100%, but the ice, ibuprofen, rest, and finally being able to foam roll and use my roller stick on it have made a huge difference.  I’m pain free this morning!  It’s still a bit stiff, but at least it doesn’t hurt!

I’m going to focus on resting it this weekend, while camping, and will probably do a test run Sunday afternoon after we get home.  I’m really hoping that I can pick up next week with the training schedule and only miss one long run (I have missed the 8 mile long run 4 out of the 5 times I’ve gone through this training schedule…interesting).

Ultimately while I would be irritated about paying money for a race I don’t run an injury isn’t the end of the world.  I don’t get paid to run, it’s not how I feed my family, it’s a hobby/sport/form of exercise that I love, but am not dependent on.  I was stressed (really more irritated at the inconvenience of it)  for about 2 seconds when my knee flared up.  But, then I put it all in perspective and decided to not worry about it.

I will live to run another day.  Yes, I hope that day is sooner rather than later, but regardless I’m not stressing about it.

A few fun pics from the last few days…

She asked to play in her room, with the door shut, that should have tipped me off!  After a few minutes she started yelling at me to take her picture, and this is what I found when I walked in.

She hardly ever falls asleep in my arms anymore….I was in heaven!

We love Rock n Roll!

I love that I can work, watch soccer, drink wine, keep an eye on Sky playing outside all at the same time.  Got lost of Jamberry work done while resting my knee yesterday!

Funny convo with Sky yesterday:
I got down on the floor to help her with something and forgot to be careful of my knee…
Me: “Ouch, that hurt”
Sky: “What happened Mommy, I kiss it”
Me: “I bent my knee too much and it hurts”
Sky: “You run too fast Mommy, it hurts”
Sadly she may be right.

Anyone running Seattle Rock n Roll this weekend?

Tell me your favorite song or band to belt out in the car!
